The Ocean is Broken lets save it through Design
There is a lot of scary stories going around that the Ocean is Broken, some of them are quite scary! Fishermen are reporting that areas that were once teeming with marine life are now dead.
“I’ve done a lot of miles on the ocean in my life and I’m used to seeing turtles, dolphins, sharks and big flurries of feeding birds. But this time, for 3000 nautical miles there was nothing alive to be seen.” Full Article – The ocean is broken (lifeless over 3000 nautical miles)

The Ocean is Broken because basically the Ocean (our Ocean) is full of shit. We wouldn’t live in a house that was full of crap and the world is literally one big house for us all, people, dogs, fish, plants, cats… There is a solution though, we are the solution! We can clean. As creatives we can use our creative thinking to generate clever solutions. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch also known as Pacific Trash Vortex or one of the five major ocean gyres has massive amounts of plastic in it. The patch has high concentrations of plastics, chemical sludge and other manmade crap.Whats even more crazy about this is that The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was predicted in 1988 (See Wiki Link) and we did nothing!

Some fab companies are popping up with a focus of reducing the plastic in the oceans and stopping plastic being dumped in the oceans. Method 2-in-1 Dish + Hand soap has designed and made its packaging from a blend of recovered ocean plastic and post-consumer recycled plastic. Their a small company taking on a big problem with a simple philosophy making a big difference. Their innovative business is proving that solutions to ocean problems and environmental problems as a whole do exist and can be used by tapping into our creativity and applying business methods to it.

The Ocean is Broken, and if you care about fixing it use your creative thinking to create solutions! If your an advertiser – let people know about it, if your a filmmaker – make a film about it, if your a designer – design better solutions to bottled water and drinks. Easier said than done but if we focus on the problem and work collaboratively as Method Soap did with Envision Plastics then we can create a recycle and reuse society that is much more efficient and friendly.
