Hovding Airbag for cyclists

Hovding Airbag for cyclists is a creative u-turn on the bicycle helmet design. The idea was conceived by two Master students studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund. Hovding Airbag founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin where inspired to develop a new type of helmet design in response to a new law in Sweden making it mandatory for children up to the age of 15 to wear a helmet.

Moving away from the rigid helmet design Haupt and Alstin developed an airbag concept. The safety device is fastened around your neck when cycling and in the unfortunate event that you are impacted by a vehicle the airbag system is deployed.

The image above shows the airbag in its deployment state, from the image you can see the large surface area created by the airbag maximising safety. Just imagine looking that good after a crash!  This is an innovative step forward for cycling safety and perhaps it could be applied to other sports such as motorsport, skateboarding, skiing and more. Check out the crash test below.

Hovding is a safety focused company however the nature of design allows for a fashionable and desirable aesthetic. The airbag can be elegantly complemented with other fashion designs.

The appearance of the airbag looks similar to a snood and so can be worn like one. Just thinking about it, how often do you get a cool looking piece of safety equipment.
