LolliPOPE by Dana Jasinkevica

Some fashion designers get their inspiration from popular culture, street style, music, nature and what have you. In the case of Dana Jasinkevica, however, her muse was somewhat unorthodox. For her latest collection it was the Pope. Each to their own.

Dana Jasinkevica is a young yet undoubtedly talented fashion design student at the Art Academy of Latvia. Her latest collection, LolliPOPE, was first showcased back in late May as part of the Art Academy’s annual Fashion Design faculty’s showcase. Every year this is the place to look out for promising up-and-coming fashion designers. So no wonder Dana’s work was one of the acts.

The idea for the collection came to her last September, before anyone had any idea what would soon follow – resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. The whole concept behind it, as Dana herself tells, ‘to make people think about the spiritual leader inside themselves – can’t we be the ones who decide what to do, in what do we believe and how to plan our life? Sometimes it’s hard to believe that in 21st century Church dogma and completely inelastic tradition is still there.’
