Graduation City of Culture

Yesterday I learned an interesting fact.  In 2014, Riga, the capital of Latvia, will become the European City of Culture. I didn’t go in pursuit of this knowledge: I didn’t read it in the newspaper or find it online; I found out this little titbit whilst I was having my lunch in Hemma

Presented by the Honorary Consul for Latvia in Scotland, the Art Academy of Latvia and SoCo (Edinburgh) Ltd, “Graduation” is an exhibition of new art from Latvia by graduates and lecturers at the Art Academy of Latvia.

Tucked away on the mezzanine floor “Graduation” is a showcase of artwork intended to show the breadth and variety of talent in the 2014 City of Culture.   Representing the work of different generations of the Academy, recent graduates’ work sits side by side with that of their mentors.  The diversity in this collection is striking, ranging from depictions of the body, landscape and urban life to abstract expressionism, each piece and artist having a distinct style and voice.

It’s well worth a visit!

The exhibition will run until 17th May, Monday 11am -7pm, Tuesday 11am-5pm and Wednesday – Friday 11am-6pm.

Hemma, mezzanine floor, 27 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh EH8 8AE.
