Katharina Fritsch – farmyard sculpture

A giant, blue cockerel is the latest sculpture to adorn Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth. However, Katharina Fritsch’s farmyard sculpture has ruffled a few feathers and sparked a planning objection from Thorney Island Society.

The association claimed the sculpture to be”totally inappropriate; however fanciful and dramatic it might appear to be … We cannot see any logical reason for the proposed sculpture to be placed on the fourth plinth. It is unrelated to the context of Trafalgar Square and adds nothing to it but a feeble distraction.

Personally, a royal-blue, larger than life cockerel would be a welcome distraction from the grey monuments and London hubbub.

Thorney Island Society’s complaint also seems strange giving the work that has previously been selected for the plinth. Sculptures as diverse as Marc Quinn’s disabled, pregnant woman in marble and Antony Gormley’s One & Other, which invited the public to use the plinth for an hour at a time for their own performances, have previously divided opinion.

But the Fourth Plinth selection process has always been a controversial topic that invites debate. The original purpose of the plinth was to host a statue of William IV but insufficient funds put the project on hold indefinitely. Only in the 90s, after 150 years of disagreement, was it agreed that the plinth would be used as a showcase for contemporary artworks.

Though such squabbles have forever surrounded the Fourth Plinth, this year’s planning objection is a trivial and unfortunate distraction from Fritsch’s bold and engaging work, which often addresses primal anxieties with reference to folklore and fable. Her previous work has included ambitious sculptures and installations such as a life-size green elephant and the unnerving Rat-King, a circle of imposing, 12-foot black rodents.
