RE FORM THE NORM

The REFORM THE NORM studio based in Glasgow is run by Finnish born designer maker Joachim King. Originally from a family of boat builders King has grown up around woodwork and carpentry. While living in the UK King attained a Mechanical Engineering degree and has worked within the manufacturing industry  Now King works from his Glasgow based Studio REFORM THE NORM where he employes his engineering knowledge and traditional craftsmanship to make beautiful furniture.

Being sustainably aware King endeavours to source materials from local suppliers. As a strong believer in a sustainable future the REFORM THE NORM studio has been upgraded to make it more environmentally friendly. King installed a rainwater collection system and has insulated the workshop to minimise heat loss and increase the efficiency of the building. Sustainability is considered throughout the design and making process of King’s creations, sawdust is recycled to produce nutrient rich soil in a bio digester, cut offs and scrap wood is used in the produce new furniture or as kindling.

GLOgrain shade, Arc LamP.

The GLOgrain shade, part of the Arc LamP designed by King looks fantastic with its glowing natural grain and surface pattern design concealed within it. Using GLOgrain creates an element of surprise when the light is on as well as producing a welcoming glow. The Arc LamP itself is made using solid wood construction techniques that have been borrowed from traditional chair making and boat building methods. The design is light and airy but is also very strong due to its construction and materials.

 Stripe Chair

Made from reclaimed mahogany, the Stripe Chair is a great example of design with materials. Designing the chair in a traditional form from reclaimed mahogany boards wouldn’t have been possible as you would likely run out of material. King considering the structural integrity, design, comfort and material quantity designed the Stripe Chair within these parameters to create a ergonomically striking design made from quality materials.

Above is a variation of the Stripe chair in black with a tweaked design curving out the sharp corners to make flowing lines from top to bottom. The chair was designed using CAD where the angles and radius’s where careful considered by King to increase comfort and structural strength. The cantilevered form and openness of the chair produces an unexpected strength and stability to the design.

 Loop Coffee Table

Inspired by the action of tucking loops into each other the coffee table design captures an almost ‘in motion’ element. As with many of King’s works that appear light, air and fragile the Loop Coffee Table is strong as the bending of the material creates a tensile strength. The designs intriguing side profile is further highlighted in black contrasting with the light coloured body of the table.
