Medical costumes Katarzyna Konieczka

Katarzyna Konieczka

Costume and avant grade fashion designer Katarzyna Konieczka creates collections that provoke a powerful emotional reaction in the viewer.  The costumes displayed show people that appear to be trapped by the costume itself in a form of torture or medieval dentistry. The metallic fixtures that wrap the face and body produce a frightening visual with the highly polished struts appearing to pierce the skin. The human face is instantly recognisable as an emotional outlet and by caging the face in mangled wire produces an unnatural perception.

Whiplash anyone? The image above shows a constraint for a medical device inspired by the 1800’s approach to healing. The costume design focuses attention on the neck with bolts appearing to penetrate the skin in a ‘healing manner’. The intention of healing through such bizarre and brutal methods is captured perfectly through the combination of textiles, metals and body orientation. This image reminds me of Frankenstein with the bolts in his neck holding his head on.

Konieczka’s costumes are designed to be one-offs and are not for everyday use. The costumes are all handmade through various techniques developed through experimentation by Koniecka. The main motifs of Koniecka designs are asymmetry, destruction, dramatism, macabre. The striking images that show Konieczka’s magnificent work where produced through a collaborative effort headed by Koniecka. Working with photographer Maciej Boryna, Make-up artist, hair and style Ania Rózga/MILK was able to created the perfect vision of her design for the world to see. The models for this work where Paulina Klimczak/NEW AGE
Anna Królicka, Jarek Nesterowicz.
