Mine Kafon

The Mine Kafon is a low cost land mine detonator that has been designed by Afghanistan born Massoud Hassani who now resides in Eindhoven, Netherlands.  The Mine Kafon is a low-cost wind-powered mine detonator that looks like a gigantic tumbleweed!

Mine Kafon

Being born in Afghanistan Hassani knows all to well what war can do to a country and so developed the Mine Kafon as a solution to the concealed landmines that are dotted throughout areas of the country.  These hidden dangers pose a huge threat to communities now and communities in the future; landmines claim approximately 42 lives every month in Afghanistan and so it becomes clear where Hassani motivations lie.

Mine Kafon

The Mine Kafon works by simply treading over mines and detonating them, the spherical shape of the Mine Kafon and construction means that its movements are generated by wind power alone and so once deployed it will continue its path over land mines until most of the legs and pressure pads have been blown off through detonation of landmines. ‘With each detonation the Mine Kafon loses just one or two legs so it could potentially destroy three or four landmines in one journey’– says Hassani.

Mine Kafon

Hassani has designed the Mine Kafon to detonate landmines but I also see this design as a warning system which beacons to people that they are close to or entering a landmine area.  Its large distinctive spherical shape would be easily noticeable in landscapes and urban environments and may in itself become an object of fear with its design associations to landmines.  If I seen a Mine Kafon and know its function I wouldn’t need to see a landmine or a landmine sign I would instinctively know whats going on and I would be scared!

The Mine Kafon has been exhibited at the London Design Museum, Milan Design Week, Helsinki Museum, Dutch Design Week, Lodz Design Festival and acquired by MOMA in New York.  From this perspective this has been a very successful project but Hassani designed the project with the intent to deploying it in an actual mind field and so has created a Kickstarter project to build a fully functional Mine Kafon to deploy in Afghanistan.  You can read more about this fascinating project and funding requirements here on the Mine Kafon Kickstarter page.

It will be great to see the project fulfilling its original design and saving lives, communities and futures!
